SS4LS, in partnership with Kutlwanong Educational NGO (specialising in STEM subjects for township kids) and The Shine Academy, launched the Mpumelelo Project in 2024 across seven townships (Langa, Phillipi, Khayelitsha, Fisantekraal, Gugulethu, Mfuleni and Samora). In 2025 the project has already reached 250 (u/13) township kids and are aiming to double that amount by 2026.
The programme has gained further educational support from Computer Mania, H&I COnstruction, Lord Taveners and DP Cricket. Support and training are provided by the SS4LS university students, who gives back to the high performance programme, by being involved in the Mpumelelo project.
The Goals of the Mpumelelo Programme
The Mpumelelo team are exposed to competitive conditions by playing against cricketing schools such as Bishops, SACS, Somerset College, Wynberg BHS and others. The best participants are provided with scholarship opportunities at these schools, with Bulelelo Klaas being the first recipient of a full scholarship to attend Bishops College.
While the SS4LS Academic unit monitors the progress of participants of the Mpumelolo Project, they also monitors these boys that form part of the scholarship programmes.
